Meet Sammi Booz this World Architecture Day
In honour of World Architecture Day on Monday 7 October, we had a chat with Sammi Booz, Managing Director of CIAT accredited architecture firm, The House Design and Build. Sammi offers his views on his job, the industry and some words of wisdom for self-builders.Based in Bristol, The House Design & Build provides architectural services across the UK and abroad, working closely with clients to provide the inspiration and technical knowledge needed to reach and exceed expectations. What inspired you to become a designer?I’ve always been creative and enjoyed painting old buildings and landscapes when I was at school, studying A Level Art. During a careers day I stumbled across architecture. I was also fascinated about how things were constructed and the processes. This is what lead me to get a degree in architectural technology. What’s the best thing about your job?I’m a people person, so getting to work with great clients every day, discussing their dreams and budgets is a real highlight. I also enjoy working with extremely talented construction colleagues and seeing a build complete. I’m lucky to say I genuinely love what I do!What advice would you give someone considering building their own home?Go for it. You will learn so much during the process and the end results can be life changing for you and your family. Pick someone you trust and that you know you can work with for a long while, as there may be bumps along the road! Are you noticing any new trends in self-build homes?Public awareness of green technology has pushed homeowners to explore new building techniques, materials and smart technology. Becoming self-sufficient and green has become central to any self-build and the majority of the clients I work with genuinely care for the environment.Tell us about the best project you’ve worked on – what made it so good?A bespoke self-build home nestled in a valley within area of natural beauty in Wales. The property has become a landmark within the local area due to its striking modular design. We maximised the glazing to take full advantage of the expansive views and natural wildlife. The views change constantly throughout the season. You never need to turn on the television!Do you foresee any changes in the way homes will be designed and built in the next ten years?Designs need to be future proof and provide multifunctional spaces that can adapt to various needs. The dream home needs to evolve with occupants and adapt. At what point in the process should a self-builder involve a designer? From day one. Once a site has been secured, engage with a designer. Sites can be complex and it can take time to work though and achieve planning. Designing a dream home cannot be rushed and will evolve over time. Take your time and enjoy the process. The House Design & Build specialise in residential refurbishments and have a bank of experience in designing high end extensions, loft conversions and property renovations. They have designed new build homes, refurbished period properties and converted buildings.
